2017 Salute to Education Anheuser-Busch scholars

The St. Louis American is among the very few newspapers in the country that has created its own 501(c)3 foundation. Founded in 1994, the St. Louis American Foundation was started to further its mission of service to the community. Its efforts are focused around individual achievement recognition events, awarding scholarships and community grants as well as its innovative, award-winning Newspaper In Education program. The St. Louis American Foundation is a five-time recipient of the National Newspaper Association's First Place Award for Community Service, and has received 15 regional and national first place awards in the last 10 years for Community Service. 

Recognition Events

Net proceeds from the St. Louis American Foundation’s four annual “Salute to Excellence” recognition events are used to fund the Foundation’s programs, scholarships and grants.

Salute to Excellence in Education Scholarship & Awards Gala

Now in its 31st year, the Education Salute is among St. Louis’ largest banquets, attracting from 1,400-2,000 attendees to honor outstanding educators from throughout the region and award hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for higher education.


Salute to Excellence in Business Awards & Networking Luncheon

Since 1999, this event has recognized top performers in all sectors of business. It has also become a premier event for business networking in St. Louis.


Salute to Excellence in Health Care Awards Luncheon

Established in 2000, the Health Care Salute is St. Louis’ only event specifically created to honoring the achievements of individual African-American health care providers.


Salute to Young Leaders Networking Awards Reception

Since 2010, the Salute to Young Leaders has honored 20 individuals under age 40 annually, who are already excelling in their career while making vital contributions to community service. This is St. Louis’ most popular networking reception for young African-American professionals.

Scholarships and Grants

In 2017, the St. Louis American Foundation, in collaboration with its education partners, fostered more than $750,000 in minority scholarships for high-potential college students and community grants for educators. Since its inception, the Foundation, with the assistance of its educational, corporate and individual supporters, has distributed more than $5 million locally, mostly in higher education scholarships.

The Foundation has established scholarship partnerships with 10 Missouri colleges and universities. Additionally, through its partnership with the Deaconess Foundation and the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, the Foundation awards $100,000 in scholarships annually for selected local students pursuing their education in nursing. Partnering with Anheuser-Busch, the Foundation also awards $35,000 annually in scholarships for college juniors and seniors.

Newspaper In Education

In 2012, The St. Louis American, along with its corporate and community partners, created the largest, and most comprehensive Newspaper In Education program in the entire Midwest. The St. Louis American now provides and delivers newspapers at no charge to nearly 7,000 students in nearly 300 classrooms in eight area school districts each week, including the program’s specific pages on STEM education, health literacy and financial literacy that are targeted particularly to students in lower-performing 4th and 5th grade classrooms. These sections are printed inside the total St. Louis American weekly print edition and on its website during the 36 week school year.

There are now more than a dozen scholarships, which universities have named after St. Louis American Publisher and Executive Editor Donald M. Suggs. They include:

Fontbonne University Donald M. Suggs Multicultural Leadership Scholarship Program: $40,000

University of Missouri-St. Louis Donald M. Suggs Scholarship: $48,000

Washington University in St. Louis Donald M. Suggs Scholarship: $16,000
