According to Allhiphop.com, comedian Katt Williams was committed to a mental hospital on Friday (November 14), after family members in Sumter, South Carolina became alarmed by the star’s continued erratic behavior.
Williams arrived in Sumter less than a week after being arrested on weapons charges in New York, and being a no-show for a scheduled November 4 appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”
Not long after checking in at the Mount Vernon Inn, the comedian was reportedly seen wandering the property early in the morning, wearing just a bathrobe and a towel wrapped around his head by motel employees.
Police arrived and Williams was said to have asked them for directions to the nearest hospital. He was allowed to leave since no crime had taken place.
But local attorney Garryl Deas reported that a paranoid Williams appeared at his law firm n not the hospital n at 9:00 AM seeking assistance, claiming the police had “violated his rights” and other unknown parties were conspiring against him.
“His demeanor was a little troubled, disoriented,” Deas told The Item newspaper. “He just said that he doesn’t trust anyone anymore. [That] everyone has turned against him. He wasn’t really coherent.”
Two family members then arrived, pleading with Williams to come with them to seek medical attention.
Williams allegedly turned down his family’s request, but they returned to the premises at noon with deputies under orders to escort the comedian/actor to the nearest mental health facility.
Local hospital officials would not release the comedian’s location or current status out of respect for Williams’ privacy.
He recently announced plans to officially retire from standup after a New Year’s Eve performance in Detroit on December 31, citing mental and physical strain from road life and the desire to strengthen his family.
