Metro East's own Reginald Hudlin has been nominated for an Academy Award. Hudlin, an Assumption High School graduate, is one of the producers of the Quentin Tarantino film, 'Django Unchained,' which was nominated for Best Picture Thursday morning.

Hudlin told KSDK-TV he thinks about his roots for inspiration.

"Will my friends back home enjoy this? Will they be excited about this?” Hudlin asked when calling in to KSDK-TV. “So I always carry the Metro East with me whatever I'm doing, wherever I go.”

Hudlin went on from his native Centreville to study film at Harvard University. He and his brother Warrington shot to stardom thanks in part to the “House Party” film franchise, which began in 1990.

Hudlin would go on direct other hit comedies such as Boomerang,The Great White Hype, The Ladies Man and Serving Sara.

From 2005 to 2008 Hudlin served as President of Entertainment for the BET television network.

Hudlin is only the fourth African-American to be nominated in this category. The Oscars will be broadcast February 24.
