Since I’ve mentioned C.J. Conrod I might as well segue into Saturday’s September Café Soul Experience. It was serving me the glory of the Lucas School House days at the Coliseum. First off I was thrilled that they got the sound together, but performances by two of my favorite Café Soul alum had me fit to be tied! First off let me get back to C.J. I knew from his serious “come with me band, because I am going to make you werk (yes, werk)” hand cue that he was going to serve. But when he kicked into Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do” I couldn’t even focus on anything else. Somebody making small talk asked me how my night was going and I replied “I came back to let you know…got a thing for you…and I won’t let go (wrong lyrics, of course)” in a sickening second alto!
And then Theresa Payne followed with a rendition of Earth Wind and Fire’s “Fantasy” that was so soul stirring that if a collection plate was passed around she would have pocketed at least $700! Now I must say that the mumbling poet a.k.a. the spoken word whisperer (my moniker, not hers) lost me, but the band was going so hard that I forgave her soft spoken take on what I’m assuming was the power of black love…or something. The band was on fire, Tendai was serving on the mic, Deevine Soundz was killing the ones and twos – and the crowd was feeling it. What more could you ask for?
