When you’re from East St. Louis, very little tends to intimidate you – not thugs, bullies, big shots, loudmouths or racists. Growing up in East Boogie teaches you to be somewhat fearless, if not tough.
When you grow up in an environment where politicians and police chiefs go to prison with regularity, you sort of learn to fend for yourself.
So it came as no surprise when ESL homeboy U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the second most powerful U.S. senator in America, called out President Trump for racist remarks, as reported in the Wall Street Journal.
The incendiary remarks reportedly were made during a recent private White House meeting regarding immigration policy and, specifically, the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program.
According to WSJ reports, which were confirmed by Durbin and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Trump questioned why America would want to admit people from Africa, Haiti and El Salvador, saying, “Why do we want all these people from these shithole countries here? We should have people from places like Norway.”
Of course, Trump issued a half-hearted denial, tweeting that his remarks were “tough, but this was not the language used.” Durbin, in essence, went on to infer that Trump lied, saying that “President Trump said things that were hate-filled, vile and racist.” Durbin attended the meeting but apparently was oblivious to the unwritten rule that “whatever white folks say amongst white folks stays amongst white folks.”
What Trump fails to realize, being a white man born into wealth, is that Durbin (a native of ESL) hails from the sort of community which Trump would also consider to be a “shithole.” So, quite naturally, Durbin took offense to Trump’s dismissive and racist remarks, while Trump simply felt betrayed for being outed by one of his own race and gender.
But it took a man with an East Boogie spine and constitution to face down an arrogant, racist, brazen, yet powerful embarrassment of a man in the White House.
So the question becomes: Come midterm elections in November, will anyone care? These aren’t Trump’s first racist rants or exploits. He’s insulted everyone and everything from President Obama’s citizenry to Mexicans, to the mother of a Pakistani-American war hero and, before running for president, was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent to people of color. The man has no filter or limits when it comes to expressions of racial insensitivity.
I just hope, that come November, Durbin’s East Boogie spirit kicks in and he reminds us about what a racist cesspool the White House has become under Trump, and leads the charge in draining the sewage from both the House and the Senate.
