The St. Louis Community College Foundation recently accepted a contribution to establish a scholarship fund for business students.
The fund was established by Jim McHugh, retired STLCC-Forest Park instructor and chair in the Business Administration department, and his wife, Susan, to assist students in pursuing an associate degree in business administration at STLCC.
“We decided to establish this scholarship because of our respect and loyalty to the college,” Jim McHugh said. “Also, many of our colleagues at the college have been very supportive in our publishing efforts, providing assistance to our projects through reviewing, supplement development, and other areas.
The McHughs also are co-authors, along with William Nickels, of Understanding Business, which now is in its 10 edition and continues to be the No. 1 textbook in the introduction to business market.
“We firmly believe that being familiar with the needs of the students enrolled in the course has been a great assistance in developing the text,” Jim McHugh said. “We try to adapt a conversational tone in explaining concepts and look to provide as many real-world applications as possible. Susan's background in curriculum development and adult-learning theory has also been a tremendous benefit.”
Although McHugh retired after 27 years at Forest Park, he did not retire from working. In addition to writing textbooks, McHugh is involved with marketing consulting with Applied Learning Systems. Susan McHugh also is actively involved with the company.
To be considered for this scholarship, students must meet certain criteria and complete a scholarship application by Oct. 30. Applications are available in the Financial Aid offices on campus and on the St. Louis Community College Foundation website (www.stlcc.edu/foundation)
