A 3-year-old boy was shot in the head Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in his home in the 4100 block of Shreve of north St. Louis City.  Police said this morning that the boy is out of surgery and listed in critical condition.

According to police, the victim’s mother said she was sleeping when she awoke to a gunshot.  She found the victim in another room with a gunshot wound to the head.  Police received a call for a child who had possibly shot himself.

Meanwhile other adults placed the child in a vehicle and began to drive him toward a hospital when they saw an ambulance, police said.  The child was taken to the hospital by ambulance where he was rushed into surgery.

Police initially could not locate a weapon, however after an extensive search of the home, a gun was found, police said.

“At this time, it is unclear if the recovered gun was used in the shooting,” said Erica Van Ross, director of public information for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police department.

Firearms examiners will be conducting ballistics analysis on the gun to determine if it is the gun used in this incident, she said.

“Investigators continue to interview the child’s parents, family members and neighbors to determine what actually occurred,” she said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
