Staff from the St. Louis County Department of Human Services and volunteers will be counting the number of people experiencing homelessness who are unsheltered.

It is part of the federally required Point-in-Time Homeless Count. The purpose is to identify the homeless not staying in a shelter on Wednesday night, January 30.

On Thursday, January 31, volunteers will canvass St. Louis County from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. to find anyone living on the street and ensure they are counted in the census. If anyone is interested in volunteering for the count, please contact Linda Huntspon at (314) 615-4413.

“Our homeless count is extremely important because we need to identify those in need of shelter and basic services,” St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said. “I’d like to thank the volunteers for their charitable service to our community.”

Money and resources to fight homelessness are awarded to communities based on documented counts of homeless persons and families. An "unsheltered homeless" person is someone living in a car, park, abandoned building, bus or train station, a campground or any place not meant for human habitation.
