Kevin L. Buie Sr. has the long title of department leader of U.S. and Canada receipts and Canada disbursements, along with outgoing funds in Canada, at Edward Jones, a financial services firm based in St. Louis with nearly seven million clients and $1 trillion in assets under management worldwide.
And some of his proudest professional achievements are designing wonky internal efficiency programs wouldn’t make much sense to most people, Buie said, laughing.
But the result is what he’s most proud of – and that’s helping people to succeed.
“It’s just a great joy seeing someone who I’ve had the pleasure to be able to help accomplish the goals they’ve set for themselves,” Buie said. “And to see them do the same for people coming after them.”
Buie oversees about 20 people who are responsible for incoming funds in the U.S. and Canada into the Edward Jones firm, along with outgoing funds in Canada.
“Being a servant leader to me means putting myself to the side and focusing the needs of my organization,” Buie said. “I look it as helping to remove the roadblocks that my teams are facing so that they can continue to develop.”
Buie spent nearly two decades in the telecom industry. In May 2016, he made the transition into the financial services industry with Edward Jones, taking his diverse knowledge base and work history with him. Since joining the firm, Buie has dedicated his time to quickly learning the industry, obtaining his Series 7 and 66 licenses, and delivering measurable results for the firm through his leadership team.
Buie has served on various committees and organizations, including being the board and volunteer development chair for Kids In The Middle. Whether at Edward Jones, within his Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity or through church, Buie is passionate about mentoring and coaching.
At Edward Jones, he helps a group of people of color who are not leaders in the firm and facilitates opportunities for them to really meet with other leaders.
“I talk about career planning,” he said. “I map out what their career looks like. We talk through how to have discussions with their leaders and have some transparency there. It’s helping them to navigate in their current roles and looking forward.”
A native of the inner city of St. Louis, Buie holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology and an MBA from Washington University. He is the trustee chairman for his church, Trinity Mt. Carmel, and leads the Young Adult Ministry with his wife, Kim. They have one son, Kevin Jr., who is 8.
“Being a father and a husband, that gives me the most joy,” Buie said. “I can’t think of any job better than to be a husband and a father.”
