Continuously published, without missing a single issue, since 1928, The St. Louis American newspaper has emerged as the leading, most-trusted voice of the area’s African-American community, and has extended its reach to become a major multi-platform media entity in Missouri.  The St. Louis American is now the single largest weekly newspaper in the entire state of Missouri.

A State of Missouri and City of St. Louis certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), founded in 1928, The St. Louis American newspaper is rapidly gaining more and more local, regional and national recognition and acclaim.


Over the past three years alone, the St. Louis American has garnered nearly 200 local, regional, and national awards for excellence in journalism and design, as well as commitment to the community. 

The St. Louis American is the reigning recipient of the Russwurm Award, recognizing the top African-American newspaper in the country, by the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association (NNPA). This marks the fifth year in a row, and the 12th overall, The St. Louis American has won that honor.

The St. Louis American is also a reigning Missouri Gold Cup newspaper, among all large weekly newspapers in the state, from Missouri Press Association. (This marks the third time in the last 4 years The St. Louis American has received top state honors).

In 2015, The St. Louis American was named “Newspaper of the Year” by Local Media Association, a trade organization with more than 1,500 member newspapers in the US and Canada.

 In 2010 the St. Louis American tied for First Place for “Best Weekly Newspaper in North America” by Suburban Newspapers of America.

The St. Louis American is also a five-time recipient of the National Newspaper Association’s (NNA)  first place award for Community Service among all weekly newspapers in the United States, as well as a six-time recipient of Missouri Press Association’s first place General Excellence award.

Current team members at the St. Louis American average more than 17.2 years of experience in the media industry. More than ½ of the team has been with the American for more than 10 years. Previous media outlets that our current team members have worked for include: New York Times, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Suburban Journals, River Front Times, Ladue News, West End Word, AAA Travel Magazine, Columbia Daily Tribune, Columbia Missourian, and more.


The St. Louis American’s circulation is higher than it’s ever been in our 89-year history. We are now, in fact, the largest weekly newspaper in the entire state of Missouri, and the largest independent newspaper (daily or weekly) in Missouri, printing 70,000 copies each week.


The new is one of the most-hit media websites in St. Louis.  The new site is updated 2-3 times each day, including weekends, for our viewers, and now features many opportunities for viewer interaction. Viewers can now submit photos, videos, ads, calendar items, announcements, comments, and much more. 

More and more readers are also reaching out to The St. Louis American on Twitter and Facebook. Among all St. Louis media outlets, the American now has one of the largest amounts of Facebook fans.
