There are some very tasty matchups this week that will go a long way towards settling conference championships.

The big Friday night game will be at DeSmet, where the Spartans will host the top-ranked CBC Cadets in a Metro Catholic League showdown. Nobody has been able to slow down the Cadets in first six weeks. DeSmet will take a swing on Friday night. CBC is 6-0 while DeSmet is 4-2.

Another big Friday night game will be the Suburban East Conference showdown between Clayton and Ladue. Both teams are 5-1 and undefeated in league play, so the conference championship is on the line. Clayton is enjoying a fine turnaround season while Ladue is hoping to repeat as conference champs.

On Saturday, undefeated Miller Career Academy will take on Soldan in a big Public High League game at Southwest High. Both teams are undefeated in PHL play this season. Career Academy comes into the game with a 6-0 record.

In North County, long-time rivals Hazelwood East and Hazelwood Central will hook up in a big Suburban North Conference game at Central. Both teams are 4-2 and undefeated on conference play.

ESL gives O’Fallon first loss

After an 0-2 start, the East St. Louis Flyers have won four consecutive games and have taken control of the Southwestern Conference. East Side defeated O'Fallon 34-21 in a big showdown last Friday, knocking the Panthers from the ranks on the unbeaten. The Flyers used an tremendous defense to pull off the victory. They forced eight turnovers, which included five interceptions. Defensive end Julius Jackson led a strong pass rush with four quarterback sacks. The Flyers recorded seven sacks on the evening.

437 yards rushing!

Vianney junior tailback Markel Smith turned in one of the area's top rushing performances last Friday night. Smith rushed for a whopping 437 yards on 35 carries and three touchdowns to lead the Golden Griffins to a 49-41 victory over Washington in a nonconference game.

248 not shabby either

DeSmet junior tailback Marcus Jester rushed for 248 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Spartans past SLUH 56-7 in a Metro Catholic Conference game at SLUH last Thursday night.

Ramon Alton breaks record

Kirkwood High senior Ramon Alton became the school’s all-time leading rusher in the Pioneers’ victory over Seckman last Friday night. Alton rushed for 128 yards, to give him 2,318 yards for his career. The old record of 2,299 was held by former Pioneers’ standout Michael Tillman. Congratulations, Ramon.
