We are now at the midway point of the season and there are several teams still out there who have undefeated records.
At the head of the class at 5-0 are CBC, Kirkwood and John Burroughs, who are all still ranked No. 1 in the state in Classes 6, 5, and 3, respectively.
Also checking in with 5-0 records are Lafayette, Francis Howell, Parkway South, Parkway Central, St. Dominic, Miller Career Academy and Christian-O’Fallon. On the Illinois side, O’Fallon is currently 5-0 heading into its Friday night showdown with East St. Louis. Jerseyville is also 5-0 and sitting atop the Mississippi Valley Conference.
We have also witnessed several nice turnaround stories as the midway point of the season. The biggest turnaround so far is at Highland, which is currently 4-1. The Bulldogs were 0-9 during the 2011 season. Other good turnaround stories this season are also: Parkway South (5-5 in ‘11 to 5-0), Westminster Christian (2-8 in ’11 to 4-1), Clayton (3-7 in ’11 to 4-1). It is always nice to see kids turn things around with hard work after enduring some tough times. It shows a lot of dedication and character.
The touchdown onslaught continued last weekend for John Burroughs standout Ezekiel Elliott. The senior running back scored six touchdowns in the Bombers’ 55-7 victory over rival MICDS last Saturday. He scored five rushing touchdowns and added a sixth on a punt return. Elliott has now scored 23 touchdowns in five games. Elliott scored an area-leading 42 touchdowns as a junior in leading the Bombers to the Class 3 state-championship game.
One of the most entertaining games of last weekend took place last Friday night between rivals Lutheran South and Lutheran North. Host Lutheran South took a 62-52 victory in a wild affair what feature more than 1,000 yards of total offense and 114 points. Lutheran South rushed for 520 yards as a team. Alex Enloe rushed for 285 yards and four touchdowns while quarterback Dalton Schumer added 129 yards on the ground. Lutheran North did its damage through the air as quarterback Justin Baker threw for 418 yards and five touchdowns. Senior Anthony Virdure had nine receptions for 303 yards and four touchdowns. Virdure added a fifth touchdown on a 51-yard run. He finished the game with 385 yards of total offense. The fans sure got their money’s worth on this one.
