‘Rise Above Asthma’ Walk in Forest Park
Recent announcement names St. Louis among the nation’s Top 10 “Asthma Capitals”
On Sunday, May 18, Olympic great Jackie Joyner-Kersee, World and Olympic Heptathlon record holder, will lead 1-mile and 5Kwalks in Forest Park for asthma awareness. Joyner-Kersee will start the event at 8:15 a.m. by sharing her personal struggles and successes of competing against asthma, what she calls her “most challenging opponent.” The 1-mile walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K begins at 9:30 a.m. from the Upper Muny lot.
Forest Park Community Hospital has teamed up with the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation to provide medical coverage for walk participants. Physical therapists with the hospital’s Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy Center will be on-hand to address musculoskeletal injuries that may occur. The hospital has recruited physicians from the community, as well as the Institute for Family Medicine, to cover the event. Podiatric Surgeon Victor Horsley, D.P.M., will also be available to address pre-race and post-race foot and ankle needs.
