I was born and raised in East St. Louis until I joined the Navy after graduation. My mother is still there, and she knew I was hesitant to vote because of so many messes going on. She had tried to talk me into voting, but I admit I was disheartened over the whole election process.

She called me and asked me to “just read” what Ms. Jamala Rogers had to say in the St. Louis American. I read the article and it made me realize that the Democratic party DID need my vote to help to ensure that John McCain did not win.

Thank you, Ms. Rogers. Because of you, I got out and voted for the first black president. Now, my grandson will grow up to believe that he truly can be president one day.
