Recently I had the honor of representing the University of Missouri at one of the most lavish and elegant events, which many consider a kick-off to the fall social season. The Salute to Excellence in Education Banquet was breathtaking.
What was clearly noticeable to me was the 30-plus generation that was in the mix. They were 10 years or less out of college and taking charge.
It made me think of the hymn, “Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in love.” The words go on to say, “the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.”
These young professionals, graduates of the various institutions from across the state of Missouri and the nation, gathered in camaraderie during the reception and the after parties. I witnessed many alumni of the University of Missouri also large and in charge. There was no swagger or chess thumping n just the realization that here they were, several years later, hanging out and they were actually realizing their goals.
Over the years, I have watched them come to campus. Migrate towards the campus NAACP, Legion of Black Collegians, Collegiate 100, sororities, fraternities, athletics … through struggle and Ramen Noodles comes a solid bond. No doubt that achieving together cemented that bond. Not to mention the live-for-the-moment step shows, campus soirees or just hanging out at the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center. The Bomb! Blest be the ties that were building a foundation for the future.
No doubt there was talk of homecoming. To that end, I would appeal to all black alumni of various institutions of learning, as you increase in number, to go back and support the students who were in your shoes several years ago. They need you.
And for the “MIZ-ZOU,” I make a special appeal to the thousands of Legions of Black Collegians from the University of Missouri to go home to Mizzou for the Black Family Reunion Homecoming, October 24-26. May you keep that fire burning and strengthen those ties that will continue to bind for many years to come.
