Special to the American
The Monsignor Elmer Behrmann Scholarship Committee recently presented Tommy Ely and Christian Johnson each with $1,000 scholarships.
Tommy Ely is a 2008 graduate of Vashon High School and a defensive corner back for Vashon’s varsity football team. Tommy also received a football scholarship from Diablo College in California. He plans to major in Business Administration.
Christian is a 2008 graduate of Normandy High School. Christian, who has a flair for art, will be attending St. Louis Community College-Forest Park in the fall with a major in art and photography.
The late Monsignor Elmer Behrmann was the Jobs and Employment Support Services (JESS) first board president in 1979. He served as the executive director for the St. Louis Archdiocese Department of Special Education, an organization he founded and guided from 1950-1988.
In keeping with his belief that youth with developmental disabilities have the right and the ability to live and grow in their community. It is with this rich history of Monsignor Behrman’s guidance, advocacy and legacy that a scholarship was established in his memory.
JESS provides summer work experience programs in St. Charles, St. Louis City and County for students with developmental disabilities who are juniors and seniors in high school. These students work in several companies in the St. Louis area for six to 10 weeks to develop skills that will be needed for competitive employment.

Fontbonne in Fenton
Classes begin this week at a new Fenton location established by Fontbonne University. The new classrooms are located at the St. Louis College of Health Careers, 1297 N. Highway Drive, near I-44 and Bowles Avenue.
Fontbonne University has held a long-standing presence in the area with an on-site location at the Chrysler plant in Fenton, where employees have enjoyed the opportunity to take undergraduate and graduate degree coursework offered by Fontbonne for the last 20 years. The establishment of the new location was prompted by recent downsizing at Chrysler and the University’s recognition of continual growth in Fenton and the surrounding areas.
“We want to ensure that our current students from Chrysler have a convenient location at which to continue their coursework,” says Greg Taylor, executive vice president for Strategy and Operations at Fontbonne University. “In addition, we recognize that it is time for Fontbonne to branch out and make our degree programs easily accessible to the other working adults living and working in this growing community.”
The Fenton location will offer day and evening BSBA and MBA courses in an accelerated eight-week format. The OPTIONS evening adult programs will offer the BA in Organizational Studies, Master of Management, and Gateway curriculum beginning in November.
With its main campus located in Clayton, the university has also established OPTIONS classroom sites in North County, South County, Chesterfield and downtown St. Louis.
