There is a lot of hatin’ aimed at the Philadelphia Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins because his continuing hitting streak is now over two seasons. Should he pass 56, he would be credited with the record held by Joe DiMaggio.

Rather than recognize the accomplishment of hitting in 37 games following Monday’s game, there are those who say he has accomplished nothing and that his achievement is false.

If Rollins were white, would some of these folks be as caustic? The SportsEye’s guess is a resounding no.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa should be commended for ordering reliever Adam Wainright to throw Rollins a strike after tossing three straight balls his way in the eighth inning on Monday. Rollins got his chance and made it count. Chances are still long that he will reach 56, but so-called baseball fans should cheer him on, not try to bring him down.
