Diana Bourisaw, SLPS interim superintendent, called the first day of school on Monday “really successful,” even though fewer than 75 percent of the district’s students were in attendance.

She blamed “technology glitches” and some transportation miscommunication for the attendance number being at 72 percent, adding that the district expects the attendance average to be in the 80 percent range by Friday.

“We’ve opened an alternative school and smaller high schools in the brief time we’ve had,” she said at a 4 p.m. press conference on Monday.

“What is important is that I saw kids learning on the first day. Students were engaged, teachers had text books.”
