Thursday through Saturday, the Universal African Peoples Organization (UAPO) is hosting its first National African Peoples Political and Economic Summit in commemoration of the 109th birthday of the great Pan-African visionary Marcus “Mosiah” Garvey at the Clarion St. Louis Airport Hotel, 4545 North Lindbergh Blvd. The summit will be convened by Zaki Baruti, president of the organization.
At the summit, there will be a call for black people to seek statewide elected political offices. Baruti notes that “even though we are 15 percent of the total population, our people are only 3-4 percent of all elected officials.” In attendance: Akbar Muhammad of the Nation of Islam; Conrad Worrill, chairman, National Black United Front; Eric Fleming, Democratic nominee for U. S. Senator/Mississippi; Bill “Doc” Walls, candidate for Mayor/Chicago; local businessmen Mike Roberts and Anthony Thompson and many others.
