Virgil Ira McKissick was the oldest of nine children born to the union of York McKissick, Jr. and Virginia Cheatham. One brother, York III, preceded him in death. Virgil attended Simmons Elementary and later Sumner High School.
Virgil entered the US Navy after high school, served on active duty and received an honorable discharge.
In October 1952, he married Francelle Naranjo and one daughter, Stephanie, was born to this union. On March 19, 1967 he married Thelma Smith and one daughter, Jerilyn Stacey, was born to this union.
Virgil was one of the first black policemen to work at Lambert Airport. He played several musical instruments and loved wrestling and karate. He wrote articles for the St. Louis American and the Argus. Virgil retired from ARPERCEN, 9700 Page Ave., where he worked as a graphic artist for many years.
Virgil leaves behind: a wife, Thelma; two daughters, Stephanie (Robert) and Jerilyn; one granddaughter, LaShonda (Ivan); and one great-granddaughter, Ivyonne; seven brothers and sisters, Ruth, Daisy, Joseph (Josephine), Benjamin (Judy), Naomi, Gloria and Doris; four sisters-in-law, Darlene, Joyce, Donia and Sarah; one brother-in-law, Perry; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
