The former teacher accused of trying to kill a student is now accused of assaulting two St. Clair County deputies.

One of those deputies has a history with Sam Shelton. When teacher Sam Shelton confessed to leaving student Ashley Reeves in the woods to die, Lt. Steve Johnson was the interrogator who saved Reeves’ life by convincing Shelton to lead police to the girl.

On Tuesday Lt. Johnson was among the first to arrive at Shelton’s mother’s home where he is under house arrest after, Shelton’s mother called 911 seemingly in a panic.

Shelton’s mother claimed he had overdosed on pills and was unresponsive, but police say Shelton appeared conscious and ready to fight.

Police used a taser to subdue Shelton who continued to kick police after being handcuffed.

According to police, Shelton’s family members were verbally aggressive and had to be ordered out of the area.

KMOV-TV reported that a source told them Shelton had “I refused medical treatment” written on his stomach and one of his feet.

Shelton is now hospitalized and is under 24-hour guard.

Prosecutors could file criminal assault charges against him as soon as Wednesday.

It is unclear whether Shelton will be allowed to remain out of jail on bond while awaiting trial in July.
