I agree with you that change in St. Louis Public Schools is the most difficult for those whose interest is their job or authority. These interests are well represented at the state Capitol by numerous paid, professional lobbyists and teachers who have substitutes in their classrooms while they are lobbying in Jefferson City.
As you point out, “radical” change is needed for the children and the city to have a bright future. Legislators will need to work at staying focused on the children because there are no paid, professional lobbyists at the Capitol on their behalf.
There are 13 districts throughout the state whose annual performance indicates unaccredited status, and 17 more that are provisionally accredited. Unfortunately, nine are located in the St. Louis metropolitan area, the economic engine of the state.
Legislators are developing proposals to help the families of Missouri who reside in districts that are not providing an adequate education so the students can attend a fully accredited, quality school as soon as possible. We have an incredible challenge and welcome suggestions for legislative solutions.
