Talking about sex will be the topic when Christ Deliverance Ministry, led by Pastors Tommie and Cynthia Ringo, sponsors a Family Purity Summit on May 1-2.

The free, two-day event will focus on helping parents become more effective in talking with their children about sex. It will also feature a student workshop that centers around teaching students how the development of strong character can give them the power to overcome the dangers of irresponsible sexual behavior.

The event will feature a Friday night session for parents, “Breaking the Silence: Talking Straight to your Kids About Sex.” Parents will be challenged to develop skills in how to openly dialogue with their children about sex.

On Saturday, the attention will focus exclusively on youth with a workshop entitled “Do You Have Character or Are You A Character?” The workshops will be lead by Jason Perry, president of Oak Tree Ministries.

Oak Tree Ministries, which is based in the Chicago area, seeks to help people live up to their full spiritual potential. Perry is an experienced minister, author, teacher and father. Nearly two decades serving as a conference and retreat speaker, church youth pastor, and mentor have given him significant insight into youth culture.

He has served in several national level leadership roles addressing issues surrounding youth, mentoring and leadership development. Among the three books he has written is How Far Can You Go? Straight Talk About Sexual Purity.

“Students would say to me, ‘When it comes to sex, our parents are scared and the church is silent; no one will talk with us straight about sex,’” Perry said.

“My goal in conducting the summits is to give parents not only insights into the pressures and challenges their children are facing, but also to give them a vocabulary that will allow them to have meaningful conversations with their children.”

Pastor Cynthia Ringo has been utilizing How Far Can You Go? as a resource for a youth study group for the past two years.

“The information in this book not only encourages young people to change or to engage in good behavior, it also addresses the mindset and motivation behind those behaviors,” Ringo said.

“As a result of this study, we were able to have a more open dialogue about the pressing issues our students face on a daily basis. It also helped them to know that someone really cared about them.”

The Summit is open to the public and is free of charge. Registration for the Saturday youth workshop is required because lunch will be provided.
