The St. Louis Rams released guard Richie Incognito yesterday (Tues., Dec. 15), two days after he was benched for picking up two 15-yard penalties and getting into a shouting match with coach Steve Spagnuolo during the first half of a 47-7 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Incognito, the Rams’ starting right guard, was voted as the NFL’s Dirtiest Player in a poll of 99 veteran players by The Sporting News last month.
Incognito’s five seasons with the Rams were marked by several incidents, including a game where he was benched for two unnecessary roughness penalties and a game last season where he taunted back at fans as he came off the field at the Edward Jones Dome.
Incognito was fined $35,000 by the NFL after a game against the Washington Redskins last season for multiple offenses, including $25,000 for a personal foul for repeated verbal abuse of a game official, $5,000 for a major facemask penalty and $5,000 for an illegal chop block.
Incognito was a third-round draft pick by the Rams in 2005. He started 35 games.
