Express Scripts helps more than 80 million Americans get the prescription medicine they need. The only way to do our work successfully is to have a workforce that mirrors those we serve. And that’s why diversity and inclusion set Express Scripts apart.
One of the great challenges people face is paying for their medicine. Express Scripts is able to bring down the cost of prescription drugs and provide better quality care because of a diverse, inclusive team of experts who rally around one passion: putting medicine within reach.
“Our employees reflect the neighborhoods and communities of all we serve,” said Susan Stith, vice president, Diversity, Inclusion and Corporate Giving at Express Scripts. “Express Scripts has an important job, and the way for us to do that job the best is to have a workforce of employees who uniquely understand the best way to deliver affordable access to medicine for each of the 80 million people who count on us is how we practice pharmacy smarter.”
Nearly 40 percent of the company’s employees represent an ethnic minority. About 70 percent are women and 12 percent of employers are bilingual. Generational diversity is also important as the company’s employee base reflects the national workforce with Baby Boomers representing 26 percent, Gen X at 44 percent and Millennials growing to 30%.
Many of the successes in our diversity and inclusion programs can be attributed to the momentum of our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). More than 4,000 of our 26,000 employees are part of an ERG. With opportunities as diverse as our employees, these groups connect veterans, increase leadership skills and opportunities for women, and raise awareness about the ways disabled employees contribute to our work every day. In addition, employees can join groups that support career development and networking, the LBGTQ+ community and cultural diversity.
Building a diverse and inclusive workforce and workplace requires intentional and thoughtful planning and execution. With a solid foundation of programs in place, from its employees to its vendor partners, Express Scripts lives its commitment to diversity and inclusion and serves the needs of 80 million diverse Americans.
