U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore

Hours after Donald Trump once again blamed “both sides” for the violence in Charlottesville, VA during a white nationalist rally, U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) is calling for his removal from the presidency.

“As we once again hear Donald Trump defend those responsible for the deadly riot in Charlottesville and receive praise by hate groups like the KKK and neo-Nazis, the time has come for Republicans and Democrats to put aside our political differences and philosophical debates for a higher cause,” Moore said in a statement.

Trump’s original response to the tragic events in Charlottesville blamed “both sides.” After being pressured, Trump issued a scripted follow up statement days later denouncing the hate groups who took part in the rally, which escalated to violence, culminating with a car ramming into counterprotesters –which took the life of 32-year-old activist Heather Heyer.

The next day during an impromptu press conference, Trump reversed his stance to his original position, even seeming to give a pass to the rally participants who came together in the name of white nationalism and racism.

“I think there is blame on both sides,” Trump said, returning to his original position about the protest in Charlottesville, saying that an extreme right demonstration in which marchers held torches and Swastikas and chanted racist and anti-Semitic slogans contained some “bad people …. but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides.”

Trump’s latest remarks spurred Moore’s call to action.

“For the sake of the soul of our country, we must come together to restore our national dignity that has been robbed by Donald Trump’s presence in the White House,” Moore said. “My Republican friends, I implore you to work with us within our capacity as elected officials to remove this man as our commander-in-chief and help us move forward from this dark period in our nation’s history.”
