The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah to prophecy to God’s people: “Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld the good things from you.” It was the answer to why Israel or the church was not prospering.

God said, “You have refused to receive correction, you have committed adultery/fornication and I will avenge. You ask why your life is like it is? Why you’re in the condition you’re in? Your iniquities have turned away the good life and your sins have kept the good things from you.”

Like the children of Israel, some still indulge in promiscuous sex like animals. They ignore the warnings. They refuse correction and their lifestyle is one of deceit, greed, oppression and robbery. They love religion but not God. They love going to church but not sanctification.

The sins of the church are the same today. Sin of worship – Thou shalt have no other gods before me. This is a protest against idolatry and materialism; Instead of worshipping God in Spirit and truth, we imitate others in worship. Then we worship the creature rather than the creator. We trust in the economy, the government or our jobs instead of the promises of God.  Philippians 3:14 I will supply all your needs according to my riches in glory thru Christ Jesus.

Sin of adultery/fornication – in the church, people are either shacking or sleeping around.  Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19.

Last but not least, the sin of perpetual backsliding – from generation to generation corrupt lifestyles; babies out of wedlock, drinking, envy, strife, lying, cheating, stealing, backbiting, gossiping, smoking and gambling. They have refused to receive correction.

If we, who are called of God are to benefit from the promises of God, recognize that our wickedness and injustice have turned away blessings, and our wrongdoings have kept the good things from us. So that’s why! Repent!

A Promise – “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
