The Normandy School District will hold a community celebration and dedication ceremony for the new Barack Obama Elementary School from 2:30 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7. The gleaming 65,000-square-foot facility is located at 3883 Jennings Stations Rd. and will serve roughly 400 area students. The building, which boasts 26 spacious classrooms, is the first new school to open in the Normandy School District in a decade.
School district officials note that the new school was designed to serve not only as a world-class educational institution but also as a center of community life. Accordingly, the facility features a broad range of dual-use space perfect for both instruction and after-school community activities.
“When voters approved Proposition K in April 2008, it was our community’s way of voicing its strong support for education,” said Normandy Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stanton E. Lawrence. “In turn, we were committed to building the kind of school that demonstrates our commitment to improving the community. We believe Barack Obama Elementary School is strong evidence of that commitment.”
The dedication ceremony will include participation from the district’s board of education, administration, staff, students and leaders of the community, including Missouri State Senator Maria Chappell-Nadal.Â
