It is probably difficult for many a member of this region to acknowledge the fact that the first week of February 2005 should forever be remembered as Don King Week. King didn’t bring the Cory Spinks vs. Zab Judah showdown to the city to use and abuse St. Louis, grab all the money and then run back to Las Vegas. King endeared himself to the city’s civic business leaders by supporting city hotels and businesses (and thrilling fight fans). He not only gave the obviously underpaid Judah a $50,000 bonus before the Feb. 5 fight; he also gave that same amount to the city chapter of the NAACP. He didn’t have to do either. He did both graciously. However, he could have left out the praising of President Bush, which left his admirers conflicted about him.
