Alderwoman Alisha Sonnier has been named to serve on the St. Louis Development Corporation board.

Appointed by Board of Aldermen President Megan Green, Sonnier has served as a member of the Board of Aldermen Budget Committee, vice chair of the HUDZ Committee, and is a former SLPS liaison to the TIF Commission.

“I look forward to serving as a representative for the Board of Aldermen in this space, bringing my experience, broadening my knowledge, and doing my part to ensure transparency and accountability,” said Sonnier.

  1. Alisha Sonnier’s appointment to the St. Louis Development Corporation board reflects a commitment to bringing fresh perspectives to urban development, particularly through her lens as a mental health advocate and community organizer. However, while her advocacy for equity and community well-being is admirable, I am concerned about the lack of experience she brings in managing city-scale budgets or handling the complex economic frameworks that are central to SLDC’s mission.

The SLDC oversees multi-million-dollar development projects, economic initiatives, and critical decisions impacting the long-term financial health of St. Louis. These responsibilities require a deep understanding of urban planning, budgetary management, and economic policy. While Sonnier’s background highlights a passion for social justice and grassroots organizing, these qualities do not inherently translate into the technical expertise needed to ensure the city’s economic growth is sustainable and equitable.

Fair wages, affordable housing, and accessible resources are vital priorities for any city. These values should be implemented as a matter of good governance, not as a result of individual advocacy. I hope that Sonnier’s voice on the board enhances community representation but also encourages the city to ensure its board members have the technical qualifications to tackle the SLDC’s extensive financial and operational challenges.

This appointment underscores the need for transparency in how candidates are evaluated and selected for key roles in urban development. St. Louis deserves leaders who combine passion with proven expertise to address the challenges our city faces.
