Students from South Tech High School gathered at Chamberlain University Friday to attend Chamberlain University’s “Experience Nursing Day.”
The event is an initiative to help students solidify their interest in the healthcare field by showing them what nursing school has to offer through interactive activities. The students learned how to give vaccinations and how caring for simulators work.
Nursing student Jadah Petford said she told the students she was mentoring that day that she wished she had an interactive experience such as this one. She said she chose nursing because she enjoys the daily hustle and bustle of being an ICU nurse.
“I always knew I wanted to do something in healthcare or something around at first, I did social work, went to paperwork for him, and I got settled in nursing,” she said. “ I got a job as a check in trauma ICU. Loved it. Been there for three years now.”
Some of the students who attended the event want to pursue careers in healthcare. For instance, Emily Pousosa wants to be an ultrasound technician. She said attending the experience nursing day has helped her gain confidence in her decision to pursue that career.
“I’m really interested in anatomy,” she said. “Doing this has definitely built my confidence, knowing that I can do it. And it’s in me.”
Chamberlain University offers an accelerated BSN program, which allows students to become a registered nurse in three years.
For Chamberlain student Deandrea Green, the best part of her time at Chamberlain has been seeing the high school students be so eager to learn new things and soak up all the knowledge that is bestowed upon them through the event.
“They have a plan, and they kind of know what they want to do, so it’s just listening to them, listening to their goals,” she said. “So that’s the best part for me. That’s what I like most about doing these nursing experience days just to hear them talk and just to see a smile on their face.”
Green said she spent a lot of time contemplating what kind of career she wants to have, but after her grandmother died, her last request was for Green to finish nursing school after many tries. She wanted to challenge herself to earn her degree early, and decided Chamberlain University is where she wanted to fulfill the promise to her grandmother.
“My experience here has been great. I love it. I’ve been passing all my courses the staff. I gained friendships with my cohort. It’s just one big happy family, one big community,” she said.
South Tech student Ryan Holloway said she wants to pursue ultrasound technology as a career. She said she has taken at least seven different science courses throughout high school, and is interested in all the hands-on experience that the nursing day had to offer.
“I like being able to try out the needles, seeing the mannequins and seeing what’s wrong with them,” she said. “Stuff like that really makes me engaged in the nursing field.”
