Black performers, designers, directors and musical leaders appear throughout the nominations for the 13th annual St. Louis Theater Circle Awards, with several earning multiple nods for work that resonated deeply during the 2025 calendar year.

The nominations were announced Tuesday evening. The awards ceremony will take place on March 23 at the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Webster University, home to The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. While The Rep leads all companies with 39 nominations across six productions, and New Jewish Theatre’s “Cabaret” tops individual shows with 13 nods, Black artists and Black-led institutions are woven throughout the ballot.

The Black Rep’s “Raisin (The Musical)” earned multiple nominations, including Outstanding Musical Director for Jermaine Manor and Outstanding Choreographer for Kirven Douthit-Boyd. Douthit-Boyd also picked up a second choreography nomination for “The Brothers Size” at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.

The Black Rep’s Founder and Producing Director Ron Himes earned multiple nominations for his performances in “Clyde’s” at The Rep and “Radio Golf” at The Black Rep. “The Brothers Size” co-stars Nic Few and Christian Kitchens earned nominations for their performances in the title roles -as did their co-star Donald Jones Jr. and Reginald Pierre for St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s “Hamlet.”

Black women performers are also well represented. Phyllis Yvonne Stickney received a nomination for Outstanding Performer in a Comedy for “Clyde’s,” while Essence Anisa Tyler earned a supporting nod for the same production. Alicia Reve Like earned a nod in the same category as Tyler for her performance in “Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” at New Jewish Theatre

In musicals, Anita Michelle Jackson was recognized for her role in “Raisin (The Musical).

Behind the scenes, sound designer Kareem Deanes stands out as one of the most prolific Black creatives this year, earning multiple nominations for his work on “Two Jews Walk into a War,” “The Heidi Chronicles,” and “The Wash.” Tre’von Griffith also earned a sound design nod for his work on “The Brothers Size.”

Black directors are also being recognized for steering complex narratives. Jacqueline Thompson earned a nomination for directing “The Brothers Size,” while Josiah Davis was recognized for his direction of “Clyde’s.”

The ceremony will also pause to honor legacy. Wayne Salomon will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades of service as an educator, actor and director, while Opera Theatre of Saint Louis will be recognized for its 50th anniversary — a milestone reflecting its national and international impact.
