STLCC to host health care programs open house
St. Louis Community College will host an open house Friday at its Wildwood campus to provide information about careers and training opportunities in health care, a field that continues to face worker shortages across the region.
The event is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. June 12 at the college’s Health Sciences campus in Wildwood. Visitors can tour instructional labs, meet faculty and staff, and learn about academic programs and student support services.
STLCC offers 23 health care programs, including nursing, dental hygiene, radiologic technology, paramedic technology and physical therapist assistant.
According to the Missouri Hospital Association’s 2025 annual report, the St. Louis region had a 6.8% vacancy rate for hospital medical positions. The college offers training for six of the 10 health care occupations with the highest vacancy rates in the region, including licensed practical nursing, respiratory therapy and medical laboratory technology.
LFCS offers childcare at Hilltop Center
As child care costs continue to strain family budgets, Lutheran Family and Children’s Services is highlighting programs aimed at helping parents manage expenses during the summer.
The organization operates the Hilltop Child and Family Development Center in North St. Louis, which provides child care for working families. LFCS also offers parenting education, budget guidance and referrals to emergency assistance programs.
In addition, case workers distribute essential items, including diapers, to help ease financial pressures on families.
According to Child Care of America, the average cost of center-based child care exceeds $1,000 per child.
“Summer should not be a financial breaking point, but when school ends, families are instantly hit with high child care bills and higher grocery costs,” said Heather Wall, director of parenting services.
