Chris Brown’s former housekeeper has agreed to accept $9.5 million over the 2020 dog attack that left her disfigured. Instead of returning to court to pursue a larger award, she chose to settle the case, according to Rolling Stone.
Maria Avila won a $12.9 million verdict from a Los Angeles jury in June. Brown later asked for a new trial, arguing the amount was excessive. This week, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Huey P. Cotton agreed that the award was too high and gave Avila a choice: accept $9.5 million or face a new trial focused only on how much money she should get. Her deadline to decide was Friday.
Court documents obtained by TMZ.com revealed that Avila has accepted a reduced payout of $9.5 million, meaning that the new trial will not take place.
The payout is separated into $3.85 million for past non-financial losses, $5.4 million for future non-monetary losses, and $250,000 for medical expenses.
TMZ reported that Avila said in court that the dog tore “large chunks of skin” from her body, causing significant injuries to her arm. She said her face required several sutures and skin grafts. Avila also claimed that she has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and nerve damage, which has made it difficult for her to work.
