A federal judge partially agreed to the terms of protesters in Ferguson, issuing a temporary restraining order against police Thursday.
The judge ruled that police cannot deploy tear gas without notifying protesters and must give demonstrators sufficient time to exit the area, although she did not define what constitutes sufficient time, and leaves that determination to police.
The judge also ruled police cannot use tear gas in an enclosed environment.
A temporary restraining order request was filed Wednesday federal court in Missouri, naming the St. Louis city and county police chiefs, and a Missouri Highway Patrol captain.
Demonstrators say police responded with actions “designed to frighten and intimidate plaintiffs and to deter their continued exercise of First Amendment rights.” They say police refused to wear visible identification, assaulted them with tear gas and pepper spray, and unjustifiably rounded up demonstrators in mass arrests.
