When you were in college, what did you think you would be doing professionally at this time? And, why?
In college, I thought I would be an attorney at this time in my career. I was interested in a career in law because I believe in a person’s right to due process. In addition, I wanted a career where I could combine my love of communicating with my love for debate. So during college, I believed that being an attorney was the right career for me- until my junior year. In my junior year of college, I started seriously researching career opportunities. That research led me to the financial services industry because there was so much growth opportunity. And once I learned about the values and culture at Edward Jones, I knew that this was the right career destination for me!
What motivates you?
My faith and my family motivate me. I strongly believe in both of them. My faith encourages me to treat others the way that I want to be treated. My family, particularly my mom and my sister, inspire me to strive for excellence. I practice these things daily through my words and actions.
According to the person who nominated you, your “positivity is infectious.” Many would say we need more of that in the corporate world…what are your thoughts?
I believe in the importance of being positive. In our society, negativity can sometimes run rampant. So I strive to be a positive person because, in my opinion, doing otherwise can be detrimental to my physical/spiritual/mental well-being.
What is the most fun part of your job and why?
The most fun part of my job is being able to assist others with achieving their goals/objectives. I find it extremely rewarding to be of service to others. And fortunately for me, I am in a position, within a firm, that supports my desire to help others.
Explain why you have decided to devote part of your time to mentoring young ladies?
I have some amazing mentors in my life. And I believe in “paying things forward”. When an opportunity presented itself whereby I would get a chance to mentor young girls in my community, I happily volunteered my time. Our girls’ club mission is to lift as we climb. So as we advance or move up, we make a practice to not forget to lend a hand to others who are in need. Our young ladies take part in a number of humanitarian efforts in our community. Some of those activities include: coordinating a food drive for an organization that provides hot meals for homeless veterans, visiting local nursing homes to entertain the residents, and adopting families in need during the Christmas holidays. I get such joy out of watching my girls grow and develop into successful and productive young women.
