The time has come for the NFL 2012 draft. This is a day and a time that, almost rivals opening day in the second weekend in September. The NFL draft has been broken down to three days. This Thursday there is only one round. Then on Friday you get rounds two and three. On Saturday you get rounds four through seven.
The St. Louis Rams have picks in every round except the 5th and a lot has been made over what the Rams might do with the number six pick. Will the Rams stay at six? Will they trade up or down? What’ll happen if the Minnesota Vikings drafts Morris Claiborne (CB LSU) instead of Matt Kalil (T USC)? Will the Rams draft another offense tackle or take Justin Blackmon (WR Oklahoma St.)?
But that’s just the first round talk. What about the following rounds? A mock draft I saw on BleacherReport.com had the Rams selecting Lamar Miller (RB Miami) with the 33rd pick and Janoris Jenkins (CB N. Alabama) with the 38th selection.
In the third round of the draft the mock had the Rams taking Dwight Jones (WR North Carolina). However before that pick the Indianapolis Colts might take Ryan Broyles (WR Oklahoma). Broyles enjoyed a terrific collegiate career catching plenty of touchdown passes from Sam Bradford wink wink.
But, Vontaze Burfict (LB Arizona St.) would be available later in the round. And Burfict is a menace on defense. He’s not a choir boy. And that’s why he’s probably not in the first round. He’s worth the pick in my opinion. Especially with the system of checks and balances that are in place on Jeff Fisher coaching staff. The 4th round has the Rams taking Jamell Fleming. With no fifth round pick the Rams have to wait until the six round Tyrone Crawford (DE Boise St.) In the last round Olivier Vernon (DE Miami).
But there is no guarantee the draft will end up this way. All it takes is one team going right instead of left. All it takes is for a blockbuster trade to turn everything upside down. Who knows? Maybe the Rams pull another blockbuster move.
Maybe they’ll trade Steven Jackson. Or maybe they decide to trade a future first round pick to the Pittsburg Steelers for wide out Mike Wallace. We’re about to find out.
Literally, after you finish reading this.
