Ameren customers in Missouri and Illinois are being warned about a wave of fraudulent solar panel installation schemes.
The scam often begins with phone calls from someone falsely claiming to represent Ameren or one of its official partners. The utility says it has received numerous reports of the scheme for several weeks.
“These deceptive individuals or companies are targeting our customers and claiming that they are affiliated with or represent Ameren, which is deceptive and not accurate,” said Carlos Ross, security manager for Ameren.
Scammers are making cold calls or door-to-door visits to homes offering to install solar panels to lower bills. Spoofed phone numbers or fake company names are used through apps to disguise caller identity. Customers are being pressured to schedule a home visit for a supposed inspection or consultation, according to Ameren.
To protect yourself, the company says to never share personal, financial or home information over the phone. Hang up and call Ameren Illinois at (800) 755-5000 or Ameren Missouri at (800) 552-7583, or contact local law enforcement, Ameren says.
Ameren does not sell or contract for residential solar installations.
