Eskchen, a participant in Grace Hill’s recent Men’s Health Week health fair at the Grace Hill South Health Center, has his blood pressure taken by Carissa Mercier, a Grace Hill HealthCorps member. The health agency conducted free health fairs at its four larger locations, and more than 700 people came to the events. According to staff members, approximately 75 percent of the people who registered were men.

County NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner Aug. 22

The St. Louis County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will hold its annual Freedom Fund Dinner Friday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Clayton.

The theme is “Freedom, Power, Justice, Vote!” and the evening will include vocalists, musicians, praise dancers and a youth orator.

Dennis Courtland Hayes, interim CEO and general counsel for the national NAACP, will be the keynote speaker. Hayes oversees national programs and more than 2200 branches, representing 400,000 members in the U.S. and other countries. In September, Benjamin Todd Jealous will assume the role of president and CEO.

The 2008 Freedom Fund awardees this year are Richard Mark, vice president of Ameren/UE, and Melanie DiLeo, vice president of Citigroup.

Borders benefits Cardinal Glennon

This August, Borders in St. Louis is working with Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center to promote literacy and put books in the hands of children throughout the month-long community book drive.

Customers in St. Louis are encouraged to donate new children and young adult books to benefit Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and the children they serve. Borders has selected and designed an in store display full of children’s books for customers to choose from. Borders will then give the books to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. The book drive is set to end August 31.

Borders in St. Louis also will donate five percent of its total sales from the purchase of the books donated by its customers between August 1 and August 31 to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. The medical center will then use these funds to benefit the children.
