More than 100 St. Louis-area students will participate in a chess-based mentoring event Thursday at Busch Stadium, pairing youth with first responders and professional athletes.

The First Responders C.H.E.S.S. program, launched in 2017 by the Saint Louis Chess Club, uses the game to build relationships between students and frontline workers.

Expected guests include Pro Football Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, along with former Major League Baseball standouts Tom Henke and Al Hrabosky. Activities begin at 10:30 a.m., with a program scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
