A St. Louis County grand jury has accused County Executive Sam Page of stealing more than $25,000 in taxpayer money to influence the outcome of a recent ballot proposition.

Page faces two felony charges related to stealing and two misdemeanor charges for improperly spending public funds, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday.

The indictment alleges Page used most of the stolen money to send flyers urging voters to reject Proposition B. The measure would have given the County Council the power to fire department heads. Residents rejected the proposition on April 8, with more than 60 percent voting against it.

The alleged crimes took place just weeks before the vote.
