A documentary highlighting the life and legacy of pioneering entrepreneur Annie Malone will debut Thursday at Lindenwood University in St. Charles.
“Annie Turnbo Malone: The Untold Story” is scheduled to screen at 6 p.m. at Lindenwood Theatre as part of the university’s Fashion Showcase. Doors open at 5 p.m. The 90-minute film examines Malone’s rise as one of the nation’s first Black female millionaires, drawing on interviews with people who knew her and detailing her business and philanthropic work.
Malone, who began her enterprise in Brooklyn, Illinois, built a successful line of hair care products and created economic opportunities for Black women nationwide. She also trained future business leaders, including Madam C.J. Walker.
In St. Louis, Malone founded Poro College, a major center for education, employment and culture in the Ville neighborhood during segregation.
General admission tickets start at $5 and are available through Lindenwood University’s box office. Proceeds will support restoration efforts for the Annie Malone Children’s and Family Services building.
