United Way of Greater St. Louis (UWGSL) hosted its annual Run for the Roses Derby event at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center on May 3–the event served as a precursor to UWGSL’s community fundraising campaign.

Nearly 200 Leadership Giving Society members committed to the early campaign donations that will be used to invest in UWGSL’s efforts to support the St. Louis region.

“Thank you to our leadership donors for making our third annual derby party a grand success. Their generosity and early pacesetting pledges continue to propel us forward each year as we prepare for our upcoming fall fundraising campaign,” said Michelle D. Tucker, president and CEO of United Way of Greater St. Louis.

“Cheers to a wonderful derby party!”

The Derby event included a fashion show, participants sported Kentucky Derby-themed attire, and there was a best hat contest for women and a dapper gent for men. Attendees also enjoyed popular traditions like the bourbon Pull, mint juleps, Derby-themed appetizers, games, and watched the Derby race on the big screens.

UWGSL Leadership Givers are a group of more than 7,000 local, community-focused

Philanthropists and professionals who commit an annual gift of $1,000 or more to UWGSL. Leadership Giving Societies include the Charmaine Chapman Society, Women’s Leadership Society, Men’s Leadership Society, Multicultural Leadership Society, de Tocqueville Society, and United Young Leaders.

“The support and enthusiasm of our Leadership Society donors make this annual event so unforgettable. We remain positive about our journey ahead as we aim to help even more people across our region together,” said Tucker.

Arica Harris says the event displayed how vital it is to give back to the community.

“Expressing gratitude to those who give back generously is vital, as they are the lifeblood of organizations like The United Way of Greater St. Louis.”

“Their unwavering commitment transforms lives and instills hope for a brighter future. Recognizing their contributions not only validates their efforts but also inspires ongoing philanthropy, nurturing a culture of generosity and community involvement,” Harris added.

“Their hard work and dedication are pivotal, and acknowledging their support fosters a sense of belonging and motivation that propels continued efforts to uplift the community.” Harris loved the beautiful floral arrangements that adorned the venue, which complemented the guests’ seersucker suits and colorful attire, creating a picturesque setting. The Mint Juleps flowed freely, adding a refreshing touch to the evening, Derby-style games provided entertainment and friendly competition.

Eric M. Madkins, vice president, community development manager for Regions Bank, says he enjoyed seeing everyone dressed in their best Derby-inspired fashion. Everything from the bowties, the hats, the bright colors, and the brilliance of Southern charm. Madkins loved watching the Kentucky Derby with everyone and seeing everyone root for their favorite horse was incredibly exciting for him.

“The Kentucky Derby is so much more than a horse race. It’s a grand celebration of tradition, elegance, flair, and community. This event brings people together for a great cause in supporting the United Way of Greater St. Louis,” said Madkins.

“Gratitude is foundational to meaningful giving.

“When we take the time to genuinely recognize those who give so generously, we do so much more than simply say, ‘Thank you’ – we build trust, deepen connections, and open the door for a one-time gift to become a lasting relationship. I hope each guest left the evening inspired, empowered, and motivated to continue supporting United Way’s important work and understanding that each of us can make a difference in impacting our communities.”

Harris said, “The event was a testament to the power of community, bringing people together in support of a worthy cause. The vibrant atmosphere, filled with laughter and shared moments, made the Derby evening unforgettable, highlighting the unity and generosity that define the United Way community.
