Gun violence vigil on Dec. 13Â
A candlelight vigil to help shine a light on the tragic toll of gun violence throughout St. Louis  will be held Sunday, December 13, at 3 p.m. at St. Johnâs Church (The Beloved Community), 4136 North Grand Blvd.
The event, called âRemember, Reflect, Respond,â is sponsored by Womenâs Voices Raised for Social Justice. It will be one of a series of vigils at locations nationwide in early December.
Speakers will include Valerie Dent, president of STL Mothers In Charge; Lois Schaffer of Long Island, NY, author of âThe Unthinkable,â and the Rev. Ken McKoy, pastor of Progressive AME Zion Church. Dent lost two sons to gun violence in St. Louis. Schafferâs daughter, Susan, was murdered in a home invasion in Creve Coeur in 2008. McKoyâs 22-year-old son was shot last June in what McKoy called âthe scariest day of my life.â He survived, but still has bullets lodged in his body.
A call to action will be delivered at the end of the service by Rabbi Susan Talve of Central Reform Congregation.
âGun violence affects all of us in St. Louis,â says Lise Bernstein, president of Womenâs Voices Raised for Social Justice. âWe invite everyone to join us at this vigil to help us give voice to all victims and survivors.â
Following the event, the âLock It For Loveâ program sponsored by Womenâs Voices will have free gun locks available for families who have unsecured firearms and children in their homes. Schafferâs book, âThe Unthinkable,â which chronicles the murder of her daughter, will be for sale.
