Gary Kornfeld has been blessed with some excellent players and teams over his coaching career at St. Louis University High, a career where he amassed a school-record 201 victories. One could argue that Kornfeld’s 2015 edition of the Jr. Billikens may have the most offensive firepower of any team he has coached. The Jr. Bills have a number of players who are capable of taking it to the house whenever they touch the ball.

SLUH’s collection of big-play athletes were on full display during last Friday night’s 49-41 victory over Vianney.

Junior running back Andrew Clair scored two touchdowns, including a 79-yard romp in the third quarter. Senior Daniel Isom scored on a 51-yard screen pass in the first quarter. Junior Tony Adams scored on a 63-yard pass and a 96-yard kickoff return. Senior wide receiver David Jackson has also hauled in some nice grabs in the first three weeks. Junior quarterback Mitchell Batschelett has the offensive working smoothly.

After three weeks, SLUH is averaging 49 points a game. They will host Chaminade on Friday in another big Metro Catholic Conference game. The Red Devils are also 3-0 and looking sharp this season with its collection of young talent.

Also, in case you were wondering, SLUH will host MCC and Class 6 state kingpin CBC on October 2.

Rockwood rocks

The four schools in the Rockwood School district have been playing some excellent football in the first three weeks. They have combined for a 10-2 record with Eureka, Summit and Marquette all at 3-0. Lafayette is currently 1-2, but their losses have come against undefeated Eureka and Kirkwood.

PHL road warriors

In Week 1, Vashon ventured down to Cape Girardeau Central and came away with a stunning overtime victory over the defending Class 4 state runners-up. Last weekend, a Public High League team was at it again on the road. Miller Career Academy defeated host St. Francis Borgia 42-35 in an overtime thriller. Senior Nicholas Walker enjoyed a sparkling day with five touchdowns to lead the Phoenix to the big road victory.

Earl’s Pick Game of the Week

Summit (3-0) at Parkway North (3-0), Friday, 7 p.m. – This is an early Suburban XII South showdown between two undefeated teams. Parkway North has a punishing ground game led by senior Rashaad Taylor and junior Ryan Smith, who have combined to score nine touchdowns. The defense is led by senior linebacker Tobias Miller and sophomore defensive tackle Michael Thompson. Both have three sacks to lead the Vikings. Summit is led by quarterback Branden Keller, who has passed for 491 yards and nine touchdowns. The Falcons defense has been stingy in the early going, giving up only seven points a game.

A few top performances

Junior Steve Webb of Westminster Christian rushed for 158 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 35-6 victory over Lutheran North. Webb scored on two rushing touchdowns and returned a fumble 70 yards for a third score.

Trinity’s freshman duo of quarterback Isaiah Williams and receiver Marcus Washington came up big in its 46-20 victory over O’Fallon-Christian. Williams completed 12 of 17 for 232 yards and one touchdown. Washington came five passes for 105 yards.

Eureka sophomore Hasaan Haskins rushed for 179 yards on 31 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Wildcats past Hazelwood Central 37-29 last Saturday.
