Olympic competition is returning to St. Louis for the first time in more than a century, with soccer matches set to be played at Energizer Park during the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Event organizers announced that the stadium, home of St. Louis City SC, will host preliminary and knockout-round matches in the men’s and women’s Olympic soccer tournaments. The contests will be part of a nationwide slate of games designed to spread Olympic soccer beyond the host city of Los Angeles.

Other selected venues include stadiums in New York City, Columbus, Nashville, San Jose and San Diego — all purpose-built soccer facilities that meet international competition standards. Final matches for both tournaments will be played at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

St. Louis last hosted the Olympic Games in 1904, the first Summer Olympics held in the United States. City leaders say the return of Olympic events reflects the region’s long-standing soccer culture and its growing reputation as a host for major sporting competitions.

Mayor Cara Spencer said the games will highlight the city on a global stage and bring residents together around a world-class sporting event.

The 2028 Olympics are scheduled to run from July 14 through July 30, though soccer matches traditionally begin before opening ceremonies due to the number of games required for tournament play. Specific match dates and team assignments for each stadium are expected to be announced ahead of the first major ticket release next year.

One notable change coming in 2028 is the structure of the Olympic soccer tournaments. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the women’s competition will expand to 16 teams while the men’s field will be reduced to 12, marking the first time the women’s tournament will be larger than the men’s.

For St. Louis, the announcement places the city back in Olympic history — this time as part of a nationwide celebration of the world’s most popular sport.

  1. you and I know , the reason they built that stadium was for the 2028 Olympics, the same way, those in charge (and its not the mayor’s) they did Mill Creek, and it starts by those up on Grand, city voters need to watch closely, for somehow we will be paying monies that the city will not get.
