University City High School alumni Peter Martin (class of 1987) and James Smith (class of 1992) will participate in the Returning Artists Week beginning February 7. Martin, a jazz pianist, and Smith, a dancer, will collaborate for the week-long residency that offers University City students additional exposure to career possibilities in the arts. The artists will visit classrooms at various grade levels and schools throughout the week -
James Smith led a dance workshop on Monday at University City High School as part of the district’s Returning Artists Week. Smith (class of 1992), who works for Disney Productions, has danced on Broadway in Saturday Night Fever and Tarzan and toured nationally with The Color Purple, Dirty Dancing and Saturday Night Fever. -

Irene Muchiri is a Senior Research Scientist at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, Nairobi, Kenya. She works in the Department of Biotechnology’s Tissue Culture and Transformation Laboratory. Irene graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Biotechnology from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, in 2004. Her master’s thesis work was in Plant Biotechnology, focusing on genetic modification of Sweetpotato for viral resistance. From November 2004 to March 2006 Irene attended a hands-on training program in Dr. Fauquet’s lab, ILTAB, at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri under the supervision of Dr. Nigel Taylor. -

The Incarnate Word Foundation awarded $5,000 grants to seven North St. Louis organizations at the Marketplace of Ideas Showcase on January 27 at De La Salle Middle School. Sylvester Brown Jr. served as the Master of Ceremonies and Ron Jackson, who helped develop the Showcase concept, welcomed a crowd of over 75 people.
