  • St. Louis native A’ngela Winbush headlines Mathews- Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club’s “Say Amen” gala August 20 at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark.

  • Alysia Lockhardt, age 11, looks on as her dad Lee and brother Justin, age 9, read Struggling to Solve the Case, the book she wrote in the Risen Publishing Camp 4 Kids, during came graduation ceremonies held recently at the Schlafly Library Branch. Fourteen students participated in the camp and were presented with published copies of their books with their diploma. At left is the girl’s mother, Melanie Lockhardt. The camp was organized by the Risen Foundation in partnership with Impact St. Louis. Each camper was given the task to write about substance abuse or mental health and how it affects their community. “All children are capable of achieving greatness if we present great opportunities to them,” said Anthony M. Mc- Donald Sr., founder and executive director of The Risen Foundation.

  • During a four-day robotics camp in August, fifth-grade GALACTIC students Aidan Williams, standing, DessaRae Lampkins, Alexis Hidalgo and Sophie Thorp, back to camera, worked on building or programming their robots. The camp allowed students to cover robotic basics to prepare them for the 2011-2012 robotics season. Qualifying competitions start in November and culminate with the FLL World Festival at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis next April. “Robotics trains your brain,” said Louis Behlmann, who attends McCurdy Elementary School.

  • Harris-Stowe State University opened the new Freeman R. Bosley Jr. Residence Hall last Friday with a host of dignitaries and supporters, including HSSU President Henry Givens Jr., board member Luther Rollins, Belma Givens, Board Chair Thelma Cook, Sydney Bosley, Freeman Bosley Jr., U.S. Rep.   • NAACP Board Chairman Roslyn M. Brock, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous, and Ambassador Andrew Young honored Frankie Muse Freeman on July 28 at the NAACP’s 102nd Annual Convention in Los Angeles. The civil rights attorney from St. Louis became the 96th recipient of the NAACP’s highest honor, the Spingarn Award.

  • St. Louis Community Credit Union recently opened a branch at the Metropolitan Education and Training Center, located at 6347 Plymouth Ave. in Wellston. The branch opening was supported and attended by many of the region’s most senior African-American elected officials, including County Executive Charlie A. Dooley, state Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal and Lewis Reed, president of the Board of Aldermen for the City of St. Louis. Patrick Adams , president of St. Louis Community Credit Union (the tall man in the back row) also attended.
