Girls Basketball
This little 5’2″ junior guard came up with one big play after another in leading the Wildcats to the Class 5, District 7 championship at Hazelwood Central.
Guthrie averaged 16 points, four assists and four steals as Hazelwood West defeated Riverview Gardens, Hazelwood Central and McCluer to win the district title. Her biggest performance came in the 56-46 victory over Central in the semifinals. In that game, Guthrie had 26 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals. She also had 17 points and six steals against Riverview Gardens.
An All-Suburban North Conference performer, Guthrie accepted a greater leadership role on the team when top player and senior Erica Smith was lost for the season with a knee injury after 11 games. Guthrie combined with 5’0″ sophomore Katrice Chambers to form one of the area’s smallest yet most tenacious backcourts.
For the season, Guthrie is averaging a team-high 15.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, with 68 assists and 75 steals. She is also one of the area’s top 3-point shooters with a season total of 58. As a sophomore, Guthrie helped lead the Wildcats to a 23-4 season and the Suburban North title in 2004.
Guthrie and the Wildcats took on No. 1 Incarnate Word Academy in Wednesday night’s sectional playoffs in House Springs.
