We like to imagine that politics and religion are separate, but they often impinge upon one another. Certainly a political signal was sent, whether intentionally or not, when last week’s Rosa Parks tribute spearheaded by the mayor, the local NAACP and Anheuser-Busch Cos. was held at the Cedars. It would have been nice to have seen this tribute taking place in a black church. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was organized and supported by the black religious institutions in that city, and thus it would have been more than appropriate for a memorial honoring Parks to have been held in a black church in St. Louis. Perhaps someone in the NAACP should have insisted on this point? Just a thought.
